Bricks and Bindweed: The Jacquard Project

Since 2021 I have been working with Hannah Robson on: The Jacquard Project. In this project, Hannah, has serviced and fixed the jacquard machine at Bradford College, and learnt how to run it. She has been exploring how jacquard weaving can extend her practice and has investigated models for sharing skills and resources with other practitioners. Hannah has been collaborating with artists from varied disciplines to explore the potential of the machine for stimulating new creative exchanges. Working with Anna Ray, James Thompson, Jodie Posen, and myself, it has been an opportunity to share and investigate colour, material and pattern. Each collaboration has pulled the project in a uniquely exciting direction. Hannah invited each artist to join her in using the jacquard technology, but left the limits of the project open. This allowed for new possibilities for weaving and resulted in experimental works bringing together surprise ideas and processes from each artist. We have created intriguing and beautiful textiles.

Hannah and I used bricks as a starting point for our collaboration, discussing the ubiquitous nature of textiles in everyday life. We have explored the connections between brick walls and woven cloth, architecture and textiles, and the rich social and industrial history of brick production in and around Leeds.
